Love This Band

Hurrah! The gig was a success tonight.

French Wives were fucking awesome and got everything off to a nice loud start, then Jesus H.Foxx were just amazing. They're one of the tightest bands I've actually seen. Blimey.

And then I pretty much fell in love with Violet Violet. Awwww. They're such nice goils.

Aaaaaand the place was busy and warm. And then I ripped out the light in the bathroom. Coz I is well ard.

Night night.

Anyway, I'm sure you've noticed that Violet Violet are playing 13th Note tomorrow night, with Jesus H.Foxx and the French Wives. Booyah!!!

Rug Cutting; After Dark!!

Well, it's dark o'clock.

Which means that you can pretty much expect this blog to feature swearing, violence and nudity. You may also expect that I will struggle to make work tomorrow.

Anyway, tonight I went to see North Atlantic Oscillation, Y'All is Fantasy Island and How To Swim at Sleazys. It was good. The drummer from YIFI is injured though, so we were given a limited edition acoustic performance. Exciting.

Please find live action photo's below, which may or may not feature the head of the blonde girl who was in front of me:

Y'All is Fantasy Island

North Atlantic Oscillation

Uhm......ok. I didn't get a picture of those guys, because I was having a wee rest and was also trying to appear cool and casual. But they were quite good. So check them out here

How To Swim

I enjoyed it, Kenny enjoyed it, the pretty violinist enjoyed it. Everyone had a nice night. Good night.

PR Chat

Yup. It'll be a reet hoot.

Anyway, while I was sticking up a few posters during my lunch-hour today, I went into the CCA to stick one up and there wasn't really a good space. So I started looking for a poster that was out of date; when I found one, I tore it down, put it in my bag, put up my poster and left.

Except that now I look at the poster, it quite clearly isn't out of date. I don't know how my mind tricked itself into thinking that the 29th of September is in the past. Shit.

Anyway, I guess I better put the word out;

SPINTO BAND ARE PLAYING ORAN MOR ON MONDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER!!!!

So now you know.

Tag Team; Me and Kenny VS .....Gdansk and Ursula Minor

Wow! I'd forgotten I'd taken that!!! That's obvvvv No Cars from the other night at the Flying Duck. They were nice.
Anyway, this weekend.
There's a nice free weekender at 13th Note Cafe and here is a list of the bands that I am looking forward to, in alphabetical order:
  • BoomEdan (17:30 on Saturday)
  • Cuddly Shizzle (21:15 on Sunday)
  • Hyena (23:30 on Sunday)
  • Nackt Insecten (14:30 on Sunday)
  • Single Helix (18:15 on Saturday)
  • Super Adventure Club (22:00 on Sunday)
  • Vars of Litchi (22:45 on Sunday)

It runs from 14:00 - Midnight, on Saturday and Sunday and will probably be quite good.

In other news, me and my friend Kenny will be DJing in the CCA bar on Saturday, which is also free. He likes rock; I like techno; we're the original odd couple!!!!! Anything could happen!! But what will probably happen is that we will play some songs.

N.O.C.A.R.S.

heyyy

tonight was fun, yeah. we didn't get as big a crowd as usual; we usually draw at least 20 people into a venue. so, yeah, it wasn't jumping tonight.

which was a shame, because no cars were outstanding. like, really fucking amazing. really really amazing. as i said earlier, it wasn't busy tonight, so i did lose a few quid, but i just stood smiling throughout the entire set. so it was ok; music is nice.

the people at the flying duck are soooo nice as well. i made lots of new friends. so all in all, a good night, thank you very much.

i can pretty much give a personal thanks to every single person who went. but i'll do that some other time, some other place.

tomorrow night at the cca; james murphy
next saturday; ......me

Basta ya de minimal!

Luciaaaano.

I know that this is old news but there you have it. There's too much stuff floating about the net to keep up with EVERYTHING, so here's a wee link to Luciano's Essential Mix on Radio 1:

Damn it's good. As is his Fabric mix. I do love Luciano.

Enjoy.

And I do not know what 'basta ya de minimal' means.

Yup. A sheep.
Come along; Raleigh Saint Clair, if you don't know, is a cool folky-pop guy. Very nice.
No Cars seem to get described as 'surf-punk' by everyone. I don't see it, personally. But whatever.
And YOU know Lyndsay. Everyone knows Lyndsay.

Drunken Canadians...

I don't mean to big-up violence etc etc.

But daaaaamn. I'd have pushed that punk off of the stage too; Morning Glory is shit.

My Bubble-Ring

Tonight was good. So So Modern are proper awesome. With a bit of luck they'll do really well. Nice lads. Nice vegan lads.

Unfortunately, due to kitten-feeding we had to cut My Elvis Leg a wee bit but they were really good. And are also very very very nice.

.........

Ahem.

I am no friend of the Metro

Can you believe that shit?? How much more effort would it take to write 'They play the Captain's Rest, Glasgow, on Sat'!

No fucking wonder it's free; I certainly wouldn't buy it. Broke-ass motherfuckers.

I'm almost as outraged as my boy P Diddy. Fuck that shit

Actually, there was a lot of chopping and changing in that tent, so I'm not sure who this guy was. The schedule reckons it was the Huntley & Palmer Audio Club, but I wouldn't recognise him/them, so whatever. You'll be pleased to know that he was awesome anyway.

Kinky Afro

Ramble ramble

A flyer here, a flyer there, a subtle link here, a subtle hint there. Well, no more self-promotion from me. Enjoy yourselves.

Here's a simple bloggy post; the beatz i've been cranking out. These posts don't always have to have a point; you should just be satisfied to be hearing what I listen to. Here are my top reggaeton/dancehall/one-drop tracks.

Btw, you should note that the each have Youtube links; it's not to make a point about illegal downloading or owt, it's just because Youtube seems to be the focal point for new dancehall, rather than forums or blogs or whatever. So, with each song, if you're lucky, you'll get a video with jiggly sexy ladies. Or you may get a picture of jiggly sexy lady. Or you may get a silhouette of a sexy lady, standing against a Jamaican flag.

Beenie Man, feat T.O.K. - Bring It On

Beenie Man is pretty much my favourite dancehall dude; the main parallel to be drawn between American hip-hop and dancehall is that it's primarily about singles and the occasional mix-tape. Which means that Beenie is the main man, simply due him being so consistant with the quality of his work. Nice.

Turbulence - Notorious

A bit of an obvious selection; I play it every party I'm ever at and it's generally considered to be the high-point of reggae or, probably more specifically, one-drop of this century. Although, Turbulence hasn't come close to matching this track. But then again, no-one else has so I'll cut home-boy some slack.

Chezidek - Call Pon Dem

Another no-brainer. I won't pretend to understand the political aspect of the track, other than venturing that it's something to do with 'legalising da 'erb'. But never mind; melodically, it's a nice wee breezy hummable number. Sweet organ on the chorus too.

D'Angel - Blaze

Probably the most Americanised track here, which makes it odd that it was overlooked by day-time radio over here. Not much to say really; just a straight-forward bit of club music. I'm not up on my dancehall gossip, but I think I remember hearing that she's Bennie Man's missus. Recognise.

Sean Paul - Watch Dem Roll

I'll actually defend Sean Paul to the death. His beats can sometimes be lazy, but his flow is consistantly brilliant. So i've no problems with him. This particular track works very well because it has a nice hyper drum track, which I'm appreciating very much. Props to Sean Paul; his rhyme schemes are just as good as Lil Wayne's or 3000's, so I don't know why he gets overlooked.

Aiiiii. Oh, and it's the Ballers Social Club's 1st birthday at the Art School on the 12/9. Sets from The Bug and Warrior Queen, as well Memory9 and Rob Soundcrash.

Bring in the love, yeah?

Sunday 24 August 2008

God bless Artrocker

Well, it turns out Artrocker know their stuff after all. Please find below a very nice review of future-Rugcutters So So Modern (as well as a positive stanza or two about local people Plaaydoh, but they're not on out next bill, so fuck em....)

Artocker loves So So Modern

Awesome. BTW, Artrocker is in my blogroll. They're usually relatively on the ball, so give them a go eh?

OH! And another thing!

I just slapped together a wee playlist for my Last.FM page. It has ADF, and Spank Rock, and AFX, and Turbulence. Eeeeeeees veeeeery laaaahvley.

What? You didn't know we had a LastFM? Really?? Here it is. No need to be stand-offish.

Wednesday 20 August 2008

Digi-PR?

We have a Last.FM page! Look! Here it is!

Help us out, eh? We have no Last.FM, or Twitter, pals.

Btw, So So Modern, My Elvis Leg, and Gdansk play Rug Cutting at the Captain's Rest on the 6/9. Yaldi!

I party hardy

A wee while ago I made Alan, from my real-life work, a mix CD which was full of dubstep (Burial, Benga, maybe Rusko. I can't remember), glitchy electronics (Autechre and AFX; the standards) and tons and tons and tons of minimal techno (Ricardo Villalobos, Supermayer, maybe Dominik Eulberg). He didn't like it; he said it was too 'intense'. So I've just made him a party mix:

1) Drei auf drei - Sascha Funke
2) Sensual seduction - Snoop Dogg
3) Calabria 2007 - Enur, feat Natasja
4) No sex for Ben - The Rapture
5) Yah! - Buraka Som Sistema, feat Petty
6) Marindo - Ratatat
7) Meat grinder - Madvillain
8) Skip divided (Modeselektor remix) - Thom Yorke
9) Drop - Timbaland and Magoo, feat Fatman Scoop
10) Hollaback Girl (Diplo remix) - Gwen Stefani
11) Like a Child (Carl Craig remix) - Junior Boys
12) Remember Love - Noze
13) - Beautiful Life - Gui Borrato
14) Bizarre Love Triangle - New Order
15) Happy House - The Juan MacLean

Yes. I fucking party.

Feel free to download this mix onto your iPod, and pretend to be friends with me.

Homeboy here is such a big fat disappointment

Tuesday 5 August 2008

Fuck

blimey; i've not blogged in a while.

we had our first Rug Cutting night last Friday and it was really really good. Unfortunately, my phone ran out of battery at about 18:00 so I can't supply any video's or photo's, as planned. So apologies. no-one else seems to have thought of doing so either and all that remains from the night is a fairly poor-quality video of Popcorn Superhet playing a NIN cover.

All the bands were brilliant though; Sean started things off really really well and created a few high spirits, which seemed to hang about for the rest of the night. Popcorn Superhet (0r 'Alan') was as noisy as I'd expected, which was nice. And Super Adventure Club were also very good and provided lots of nice wee twists and turns. After that, I just went home.

I was supposed to go to Ratatat on Saturday, but I forgot to buy tickets so I thought I'd get some on the night, but it was sold out. I was gutted. Nicola, the girl I was supposed to be going with, didn't seem all that concerned. We just went to Sleazy's instead.

Some More Techno?

hm...

Interesting piece in Pitchfork by Philip Sherburne, about how rubbish techno is these days. I half agree; the scene over here is fucking rank, but I guess I'll have to make do with headphone dj mixes.

Anyway, to cheer myself up, here's a list of my 5 favourite tracks of the mo' , new or old, with links underneath.

Please note that all links are to Myspaces or maybe to a Juno page, because too much SendSpace will make you go blind.

Nightguy - Pretty Face - Kompakt Extra
This was the on the recent Speicher 58, along with Steadycam's 'Get On Up There', and frankly, it stole the show with its warm drones and sampled clicky guitar notes. Eees verry nice.
Listen to it somewhere in here

Tom Ellis - Gain - Minibar Music
To be perfectly honest, Tom Ellis is sort of new to me, so I don't really feel qualified to give this track a proper intro. But yeah, quality clicky minimal, from Wales. I'm sure he'd be more widely known if he was from Stockholm or Hamburg.
Listen to it somewhere in here

Move D & Benjamin Brunn - Melons - Smallville Records
Another fairly recent acquaintance of mine; pretty much as deep as deep can get really, with some lush ambient washes going on underneath. Easily my track of the year so far; worth buying £70 head-phones for.
Listen to it somewhere in here

Melchior Productions (a.k.a. Thomas Melchior) - Watersoul - Perlon
It says a lot when a producer can stand out on Perlon, which just so happens to be my favourite label. I guess this is some more deep/minimal/ambient techno, and yet is totally essential.
Listen to it somewhere in here

Philip Sherburne - Salt & Vinegar - Lan Muzic
That's a bit ironic, eh?

Vasco EP

By the by, I finally got my copy of Ricardo Villalobos' Vasco Part 1 EP this morning. It's probably the most danceable thing he's done in a wee while, which is a good thing since I've always favoured his DJ sets to most of his output (although his Fabric mix was beautiful).

Maybe Ricardo become re-acquainted with the dancefloor means we'll get some Villalobos pumped out at the Sub Club or the Arches. Maybe.
